The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted Canadians’ dental health routines and made it difficult for patients to receive the dental care they need.
Like most dental offices in Mississauga, Trillium Smile Dentistry has continued to offer dental services throughout the pandemic. As we are considered an essential service in Ontario, we are still open and available to provide dental care.
We have modified our usual practices and made additional investments to ensure that our patients feel comfortable when they visit our office during the ongoing pandemic. Here is what you can expect from us at this time.
Emergency and Routine Care Available
Emergency care is always one of our top priorities at Trillium Smile Dentistry, and this situation is no exception. Please call us as soon as possible if you are experiencing a dental emergency, including any of the following:
- Dental abscesses and infections
- Worsening bleeding or swelling with no known cause
- Extreme tooth sensitivity or pain
- A fractured or chipped tooth that is causing you pain
- Knocked-out teeth
If you are unsure about whether your case qualifies as an emergency, call our dental office. We will ask some questions and let you know whether you need emergency treatment.
We also offer our usual comprehensive dental care, including check-ups, cleanings, fillings, and other essential preventative dental services. However, appointments may be more limited than usual due to physical distancing requirements. If you would like to book a standard dental care appointment, please call us in advance of your preferred appointment date so we can make every effort to accommodate you.
Keeping You Safe From COVID-19
To limit the spread of illness during COVID-19, we have implemented a few changes in our dental office.
Breaking the Chain of Infection
We take extensive precautions to ensure that COVID-19 is not transmitted inside our clinic, including using PPE, performing regular sterilization and disinfection, practicing proper hand hygiene, performing regular screenings, establishing new patient-based protocols, and more. Our office is equipped with:
- Alcohol-based hand sanitizer
- Paper tissues
- Disposable masks
- Posters that remind patients of proper safety and etiquette procedures
- Air Purifiers
There is an air purifier in each room, as well as the waiting area. Each operatory is isolated using plastic doors, and the room is cleaned once each patient is finished.
Patient and Staff Screening Protocols
Staff are screened every day before arriving at work, and all patients and visitors to the office are screened before they enter the building. Anyone showing symptoms of COVID-19 or who has been in contact with someone who has been diagnosed with COVID-19 will be denied entry and asked to return when it is safe to do so.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
To minimize the spread of infection, our staff is currently wearing additional PPE while performing their work. Some of the PPE you will see in use within our office includes:
- Masks
- Gloves
- Goggles and other protective eyewear
- Gowns
- Protective draping
- Face shields
Patients will also be asked to wear a mask during visits to our office. If you do not have a mask with you when you arrive, we will provide one for you.
Modified Patient Waiting Room
We have removed all non-essential items from our waiting room, including all books, magazines, and children’s toys. We have also temporarily stopped offering coffee and water to our patients.
Further, only minors and patients who require guardians may bring an additional person to the clinic with them. All other patients must attend their appointments alone, including those living in the same household who have chosen us as their family dentist.
At times, we may close our waiting room entirely. When this happens, we ask that you wait outside of our clinic until you are called in for your appointment. Alternatively, we may request that you call the office once you arrive to complete a screening, and we will call you back once it is safe for you to enter.
Physical Distancing
Patients, staff, and other visitors to our office are required to remain at least 6 feet (or 2 metres) away from each other whenever possible. When the nature of dental procedures makes this impossible, we take every precaution to ensure patients and staff remain protected from infection.
Equipment Sanitation
Hygiene and sanitation are critically important to providing safe dental care even under normal conditions. In the face of COVID-19, we have implemented enhanced cleaning procedures to minimize the threat of infection. All surfaces in our clinic are sanitized at the beginning and end of each workday, and surfaces inside each treatment room are also cleaned after each patient leaves.
These new procedures are in full compliance with the Canadian Standards Association, Health Canada, the Public Health Agency of Canada, and applicable IPAC guidelines.
